George Herbert Walker Bush, 1924.  41st President of the United States, 1989-1993.  Typed Letter Signed, George Bush, one page, quarto, on personal stationery, January 24, 1994.

Four days past a year after leaving the White House, Bush courteously declines an invitation to attend a meeting of the Maine Press Association.  He writes of his travel schedule and writing responsibilities.  In part:  “I hate to miss the Maine Press Association's ‘pat-on-the-back' gatherings, but I must decline your invitation.  Life is still hectic, with the travel schedule and work on our books."

Bush made a healthy number of public appearances after he left office and evidently refers in this letter to both former First Lady Barbara Bush's book, Barbara Bush: A Memoir, which was published in 1994, and his own book, A World Transformed, which he finally published in 1998 with his former National Security Advisor, General Brent Scowcroft.  In a letter dated exactly a month after this one, Bush noted that Barbara "is up to her eyeballs writing a book.  In fact, every morning, before 5:30, she is sitting next to me in bed, her little computer on her lap, hammering away."  Bush says in the preface to All the Best, George Bush: My Life in Letters and Other Writings that he declined to write memoirs, as such, after he left office in 1993 and felt these two books ‘got it right' both on perceptions of the Bushes as a family and on how my administration tried to handle the foreign-policy problems we faced."  He subsequently published All the Best, which he described as "a personal book, a book giving a deeper insight into what my own heartbeat is, what my values are, what has motivated me in life,” in 1999.

Bush has signed this letter with a beautiful black signature.  The letter has mailing folds and a tiny toned spot in the very upper left.  It is in very fine condition.
